Welcome to the 2010 Farm Season. Each farm year starts with anticipation and expectations even in this eighteenth year of operation. New animals have joined the farm with a milk cow named Mingo and three new fjord horses. Mingo's calf is due the end of February and I will keep you posted as that develops. Right now I am fine tuning the seed order for the year and looking at farm equipment catalogues. The first seeds are planted at the beginning of March starting with onions, shallots and leeks that need to be planted with plenty of time to grow.
There is a new winter pump in the barn that is powered by foot pedals. It is fun to not use electricity to get water for the animals. The water is lifted up through a hose and goes outside so I don't even have to lug heavy buckets.
I hope you join the farm this season and share in the bounty and the challenges that come with growing local, healthy food. What does it mean to share the risk with a farmer? CSA is more than a marketing tool, it is a tool for social change where a group of people decide to support someone to farm. I pledge that I will do my best given the challenges of weather, nature and the economy to grow a bounty of fresh, healthy food for all of you. For your part, you pledge to support the farm though the good times and the difficult. CSA is not for everyone. It requires a commitment to cooking and dealing with an abundance of vegetables. Sometimes the best way is by giving them to neighbors and friends when you are too overwhelmed or busy. Share the wealth of goodies. Plan on visiting the farm to see where your food is grown. This is the best way to fully enjoy a share in North Creek Community Farm.
